Narrative:
We were flying at cruise altitude when the controller asked us to 'cross 10 mi northwest of lake hughes at and maintain 12000 ft.' as we passed through 13000 ft the controller stated that he had only cleared us to 13000 ft he then advised us to continue our descent to 9000 ft. In the future I will make a greater effort as the PF to monitor all radio communications more closely.
