Narrative:
New radio equipment has recently been installed in the cessna 421 that I fly for a local company. The WX was VFR all the way to my destination (vny) van nuys, ca. I wanted the practice, so I filed IFR and picked up my clearance at marri intersection just south of my departure point, minden, nv (mev). En route, my clearance was amended a couple of times, the last being bakersfield approach just mins prior to arriving at lake hughes VOR, where I was cleared direct thence via the lynxx 7 arrival to vny, (STAR). Upon arrival to lhs, I proceeded to laamb intersection that calls for 7800 ft. I was promptly jumped on by ZLA at 8700 ft and told to get back to previously assigned 9000 ft. I did not argue and complied immediately. I don't file for stars and rarely ever receive one, but this was a bit confusing and confusion has been known to cause accidents. I'm not certain just what needs to be done, but I would like to have clarification on this matter.
