Narrative:
Engine flameout at FL350 in cruise flight. Declared an emergency and descended to FL250. Attempted an in-flight engine restart with no success. Performed red border checklist for engine shutdown. Contacted dispatch and diverted to fsd. Landed at fsd without incidence. Emergency equipment was standing by. Parked in a remote area to check brakes. An hour later we were towed to the gate area for passenger deplaning. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the captain stated that the 'tower shaft bearing' near the N2 compressor had failed, making an air restart impossible. The passenger were inconvenienced for 3 hours until another aircraft could be flown in for their continuation to destination airport. The aircraft was delayed at the remote area for 1 hour until a tug could be obtained. The PIC elected to go to that area for a brake temperature check to insure ground crew safety. The brakes were not overheated.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B757-200 FLC IS UNABLE TO AIR RESTART THEIR L ENG AT FL250 AFTER A FLAMEOUT AT FL350 100 MI W OF THEIR DIVERSIONARY ARPT OF FSD, SD.
Narrative: ENG FLAMEOUT AT FL350 IN CRUISE FLT. DECLARED AN EMER AND DSNDED TO FL250. ATTEMPTED AN INFLT ENG RESTART WITH NO SUCCESS. PERFORMED RED BORDER CHKLIST FOR ENG SHUTDOWN. CONTACTED DISPATCH AND DIVERTED TO FSD. LANDED AT FSD WITHOUT INCIDENCE. EMER EQUIP WAS STANDING BY. PARKED IN A REMOTE AREA TO CHK BRAKES. AN HR LATER WE WERE TOWED TO THE GATE AREA FOR PAX DEPLANING. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE CAPT STATED THAT THE 'TOWER SHAFT BEARING' NEAR THE N2 COMPRESSOR HAD FAILED, MAKING AN AIR RESTART IMPOSSIBLE. THE PAX WERE INCONVENIENCED FOR 3 HRS UNTIL ANOTHER ACFT COULD BE FLOWN IN FOR THEIR CONTINUATION TO DEST ARPT. THE ACFT WAS DELAYED AT THE REMOTE AREA FOR 1 HR UNTIL A TUG COULD BE OBTAINED. THE PIC ELECTED TO GO TO THAT AREA FOR A BRAKE TEMP CHK TO INSURE GND CREW SAFETY. THE BRAKES WERE NOT OVERHEATED.
