Narrative:

I was captain of a flight from lax to jfk. After 2 1/2 hours our crew meal was served. Within 45-60 mins I felt nauseated. I went to the lavatory and vomited. I went back to the cockpit and told my first officer I felt much better, so we continued to jfk. We had a deadheading B767 captain on board. However, the captain was through flying and had a drink. His first officer did not have a drink. I was not going to let a pilot into the cockpit after having alcohol, so I had his first officer situation on the jump seat. As we got ready to start down, I started having diarrhea (6 events). I put the first officer into my seat. I felt better and returned to the cockpit. At approximately FL180, I got back into my seat. As we descended below 5000 ft, I started vomiting at my station. I used the trash bag to avoid damaging the avionics. I left the cockpit and had severe vomiting for several mins. I returned to the cockpit as fast as I could. We were approximately 1800 ft AGL. I told the first officer to stay in my seat, as a seat change would have been more dangerous at that point. The flying first officer landed and turned off the runway. I switched seats with the new first officer and taxied to the gate. In the future: I will divert at the first signs of food poisoning. I will have the pilot at controls 'loiter' if the other crew member is sick at low level until they can get back into their seat. I will check for deadheading pilots, including non company. I will request NASA, company, and FAA come up with a food poisoning checklist. I will use 100% oxygen to alleviate nausea sensations.
