Narrative:
At XA55 jul/xa/00 we departed the gate for lansing, mi. The takeoff was normal and at 3500 ft MSL the aircraft was yawing to the right and vibrating followed by a loud bang and flash of white light. The #2 engine failed. We completed all the memory items for engine fire/severe damage in-flight and completed all appropriate QRH procedures. An emergency was declared with cvg departure control right after the engine failed. We decided to return for landing at cvg. ATC vectored us for the ILS runway 18L, and the landing was uneventful and normal. We were told that another aircraft was ready for us to fly the lansing flight. Company advised us there was no crew available. The captain, the first officer, and the flight attendant refused to continue. Report time XA20. Duty day 12 hours 53 mins. Emergency occurred on the 7TH leg. If we accepted that assignment our duty would exceed 14 hours. We went home after this incident and resumed the trip on the following day at XP25.
