Narrative:
Was cleared to taxi to runway 1 via taxiway F with a turn on taxiway G. We consulted the airport diagram and began to taxi in the wrong direction by mistake. We realized our mistake at the same time the ground controller told us to stop and informed us of our mistake. We were then offered runway 19 for departure and accepted that after considering our runway analysis. We taxied in the wrong direction by mistake and no incident occurred. The situation could have been avoided if the crew had asked more questions, or the controller had given more specific/easier directions. Supplemental information from acn 478671: the taxi instructions from ground controller were 'taxi to runway 1, cross runway 7/25 at taxiway G.' this would have required a right turn from the terminal ramp and a southwest taxi on taxiway F. Instead, I made a left turn and taxied northeast on taxiway F. As we approached runway 1/19 on taxiway F, we noted our error. At the same time we stopped, ground controller told us to 'stop.'
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN SF340 PIC TAXIES THE WRONG WAY WHEN ASSIGNED RWY 1 FOR TKOF. HE TURNED TOWARDS RWY 19. TWR RECLRS FLT TO TAXI TO RWY 19 AT RFD, IL.
Narrative: WAS CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 1 VIA TXWY F WITH A TURN ON TXWY G. WE CONSULTED THE ARPT DIAGRAM AND BEGAN TO TAXI IN THE WRONG DIRECTION BY MISTAKE. WE REALIZED OUR MISTAKE AT THE SAME TIME THE GND CTLR TOLD US TO STOP AND INFORMED US OF OUR MISTAKE. WE WERE THEN OFFERED RWY 19 FOR DEP AND ACCEPTED THAT AFTER CONSIDERING OUR RWY ANALYSIS. WE TAXIED IN THE WRONG DIRECTION BY MISTAKE AND NO INCIDENT OCCURRED. THE SIT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF THE CREW HAD ASKED MORE QUESTIONS, OR THE CTLR HAD GIVEN MORE SPECIFIC/EASIER DIRECTIONS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 478671: THE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS FROM GND CTLR WERE 'TAXI TO RWY 1, CROSS RWY 7/25 AT TXWY G.' THIS WOULD HAVE REQUIRED A R TURN FROM THE TERMINAL RAMP AND A SW TAXI ON TXWY F. INSTEAD, I MADE A L TURN AND TAXIED NE ON TXWY F. AS WE APCHED RWY 1/19 ON TXWY F, WE NOTED OUR ERROR. AT THE SAME TIME WE STOPPED, GND CTLR TOLD US TO 'STOP.'
