Narrative:
We were holding short of runway 3R at dtw. Runway 3C is also on the same frequency. Another air carrier xyz was holding short of runway 3C. We were air carrier xyz. There was a lot of radio traffic on the frequency. We heard 'xyz taxi into position and hold.' first officer read this back. However, the other air carrier xyz on runway 3C was closer to the tower, so his readback probably blocked out our readback. Therefore, we never received a correction from tower. Next, after approximately 1 1/2 mins, I was concerned because we knew there was traffic on final. We could not break in on the frequency, and I then heard someone say 'what's going on the right?' I then pwred up to clear the runway as the controller said for the traffic on final to go around. Then after another few mins we were cleared to take off runway heading. Contributing factors were the identical call signs of 2 airlines, on the same frequency for 2 different runways, at the exact time holding short, and radio congestion.

Title: SIMILAR CALL SIGNS LEAD TO ACFT TAKING RWY WITHOUT CLRNC AT DTW, MI. GAR IS THE RESULT.
Narrative: WE WERE HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 3R AT DTW. RWY 3C IS ALSO ON THE SAME FREQ. ANOTHER ACR XYZ WAS HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 3C. WE WERE ACR XYZ. THERE WAS A LOT OF RADIO TFC ON THE FREQ. WE HEARD 'XYZ TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD.' FO READ THIS BACK. HOWEVER, THE OTHER ACR XYZ ON RWY 3C WAS CLOSER TO THE TWR, SO HIS READBACK PROBABLY BLOCKED OUT OUR READBACK. THEREFORE, WE NEVER RECEIVED A CORRECTION FROM TWR. NEXT, AFTER APPROX 1 1/2 MINS, I WAS CONCERNED BECAUSE WE KNEW THERE WAS TFC ON FINAL. WE COULD NOT BREAK IN ON THE FREQ, AND I THEN HEARD SOMEONE SAY 'WHAT'S GOING ON THE R?' I THEN PWRED UP TO CLR THE RWY AS THE CTLR SAID FOR THE TFC ON FINAL TO GO AROUND. THEN AFTER ANOTHER FEW MINS WE WERE CLRED TO TAKE OFF RWY HDG. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WERE THE IDENTICAL CALL SIGNS OF 2 AIRLINES, ON THE SAME FREQ FOR 2 DIFFERENT RWYS, AT THE EXACT TIME HOLDING SHORT, AND RADIO CONGESTION.
