Narrative:
We taxied onto runway 32, taxi back to runway 14. We made appropriate radio calls, referenced TCASII and proceeded on to the runway. A C172 was beginning a takeoff roll on runway 32 without making any radio calls. They aborted takeoff and then called us on the radio. Winds were variable at 3 KTS and no traffic was reported when requested. Cannot stress the importance of visual confirmation and radio calls and uncontrolled fields. Inability to see the end of runway 32 and failure to make appropriate radio calls caused the incident. Fortunately no incident occurred and both aircraft went on their way. Supplemental information from acn 480730: I observed a commuter also preparing to taxi. When I taxied onto runway 32 and announced my intention, over unicom frequency, to take off on runway 32 and depart to the northwest, as I was accelerating down the runway the aircraft taxied onto the runway and turned to taxi back to the departure end of runway 14. I called the aircraft on unicom on taxi back, I was on my takeoff roll, 'are you going to run me over or give me time to clear the runway?' (meaning my takeoff announcement) to which I responded 'you have eyes don't you -- I saw you.'
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A VERBALLY AGGRESSIVE LOW TIME PLT BEGAN THIS TKOF ROLL ON THE OPPOSING RWY FROM AN ACR ACFT HE HAD JUST OBSERVED TAXIING OUT. HE ABORTED HIS TKOF WHILE CHASTISING THE ACR CAPT.
Narrative: WE TAXIED ONTO RWY 32, TAXI BACK TO RWY 14. WE MADE APPROPRIATE RADIO CALLS, REFED TCASII AND PROCEEDED ON TO THE RWY. A C172 WAS BEGINNING A TKOF ROLL ON RWY 32 WITHOUT MAKING ANY RADIO CALLS. THEY ABORTED TKOF AND THEN CALLED US ON THE RADIO. WINDS WERE VARIABLE AT 3 KTS AND NO TFC WAS RPTED WHEN REQUESTED. CANNOT STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF VISUAL CONFIRMATION AND RADIO CALLS AND UNCTLED FIELDS. INABILITY TO SEE THE END OF RWY 32 AND FAILURE TO MAKE APPROPRIATE RADIO CALLS CAUSED THE INCIDENT. FORTUNATELY NO INCIDENT OCCURRED AND BOTH ACFT WENT ON THEIR WAY. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 480730: I OBSERVED A COMMUTER ALSO PREPARING TO TAXI. WHEN I TAXIED ONTO RWY 32 AND ANNOUNCED MY INTENTION, OVER UNICOM FREQ, TO TAKE OFF ON RWY 32 AND DEPART TO THE NW, AS I WAS ACCELERATING DOWN THE RWY THE ACFT TAXIED ONTO THE RWY AND TURNED TO TAXI BACK TO THE DEP END OF RWY 14. I CALLED THE ACFT ON UNICOM ON TAXI BACK, I WAS ON MY TKOF ROLL, 'ARE YOU GOING TO RUN ME OVER OR GIVE ME TIME TO CLR THE RWY?' (MEANING MY TKOF ANNOUNCEMENT) TO WHICH I RESPONDED 'YOU HAVE EYES DON'T YOU -- I SAW YOU.'
