Narrative:

On approach into fnt, fnt approach control cleared us for ILS approach runway 27. The intercept heading didn't appear right, so we corrected in what we thought was the correct direction. We were told to contact fnt tower. On initial tower contact, the controller said the ILS was set for runway 9 and would we be able to get down for landing runway 27. We were just at the cloud bases and had intermittent view of the field. It became obvious we wouldn't be able to make a normal descent so we elected to go around at pattern altitude and do a visual approach to runway 27. In a phone conversation with tower later, we learned the localizer had been switched by mistake. Lesson learned: check the ILS identify before conducting an ILS approach.

Title: A DC9 FLC ATTEMPTS TO MAKE A NORMAL ILS APCH TO RWY 27, WHEN THEY ARE LATER ADVISED THAT THE ILS WAS SET FOR RWY 9 AT FNT, MI.

Narrative: ON APCH INTO FNT, FNT APCH CTL CLRED US FOR ILS APCH RWY 27. THE INTERCEPT HDG DIDN'T APPEAR RIGHT, SO WE CORRECTED IN WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS THE CORRECT DIRECTION. WE WERE TOLD TO CONTACT FNT TWR. ON INITIAL TWR CONTACT, THE CTLR SAID THE ILS WAS SET FOR RWY 9 AND WOULD WE BE ABLE TO GET DOWN FOR LNDG RWY 27. WE WERE JUST AT THE CLOUD BASES AND HAD INTERMITTENT VIEW OF THE FIELD. IT BECAME OBVIOUS WE WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO MAKE A NORMAL DSCNT SO WE ELECTED TO GAR AT PATTERN ALT AND DO A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 27. IN A PHONE CONVERSATION WITH TWR LATER, WE LEARNED THE LOC HAD BEEN SWITCHED BY MISTAKE. LESSON LEARNED: CHK THE ILS IDENT BEFORE CONDUCTING AN ILS APCH.
