Narrative:
The first officer completed the load manifest prior to landing in roc. We received a release with a changed basic operating weight, which was greater than the actual weight by 252 pounds. Because the first officer assumed that the weight hadn't changed (why would it?) he didn't check the release. The basic operating weight center of gravity was different on the erroneous release and we didn't have seat blocking data on it. We then used the company weight and balance to complete the form properly. Dispatch called us en route (we had advised them of the situation before we left roc), and advised us of the actual numbers. In any case, the seat blocking was sufficient, and the flight continued without incident. In the future, if I encounter a basic operating weight center of gravity which is uncharted (this is the first in my 8 yrs on the aircraft), I will verify all of the numbers on the release, as well as the load manifest paperwork.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A DEHAVILLAND DASH 8 WAS ISSUED A RELEASE FROM DISPATCH THAT WAS IN CONFLICT WITH THE CREW CALCULATED ACFT WT.
Narrative: THE FO COMPLETED THE LOAD MANIFEST PRIOR TO LNDG IN ROC. WE RECEIVED A RELEASE WITH A CHANGED BASIC OPERATING WT, WHICH WAS GREATER THAN THE ACTUAL WT BY 252 LBS. BECAUSE THE FO ASSUMED THAT THE WT HADN'T CHANGED (WHY WOULD IT?) HE DIDN'T CHK THE RELEASE. THE BASIC OPERATING WT CTR OF GRAVITY WAS DIFFERENT ON THE ERRONEOUS RELEASE AND WE DIDN'T HAVE SEAT BLOCKING DATA ON IT. WE THEN USED THE COMPANY WT AND BAL TO COMPLETE THE FORM PROPERLY. DISPATCH CALLED US ENRTE (WE HAD ADVISED THEM OF THE SIT BEFORE WE LEFT ROC), AND ADVISED US OF THE ACTUAL NUMBERS. IN ANY CASE, THE SEAT BLOCKING WAS SUFFICIENT, AND THE FLT CONTINUED WITHOUT INCIDENT. IN THE FUTURE, IF I ENCOUNTER A BASIC OPERATING WT CTR OF GRAVITY WHICH IS UNCHARTED (THIS IS THE FIRST IN MY 8 YRS ON THE ACFT), I WILL VERIFY ALL OF THE NUMBERS ON THE RELEASE, AS WELL AS THE LOAD MANIFEST PAPERWORK.
