Narrative:
The first officer was flying on a vector for approach to ric. While flying an assigned heading, we were given a descent clearance from 4000 ft to 3000 ft MSL. The autoplt was engaged and flying the descent. Upon reaching our assigned altitude, the autoplt failed to capture altitude and level the aircraft. We descended 400 ft below our assigned altitude before immediate action was taken to climb back to our assigned altitude. There were no conflicts with other traffic and no comments were made by ATC.
