Narrative:

Location: 10 mi south ord on vector, arrival on vectors for downwind ord, we were cleared to descend to 6000 ft. At 6500 ft approach control asked us our altitude. We advised them '6500 ft for 6000 ft.' we were advised that our clearance was for 7000 ft and to climb and maintain 7000 ft.' the captain and I were confident that we understood, read back, and pointed to the proper altitude of 6000 ft when we received the original clearance. We still are.
