Narrative:
Taxiing from north ramp to south ramp along taxiway D. Taxiway crosses active runway 5/23. Ground control cleared me to taxi and hold short of active runway as an aircraft was taking off. As I approached hold short line, I became distraction by an item falling off the seat next to me. As a result, I inadvertently taxied past the hold short line. At that moment I looked up and stopped as the aircraft was taking off on the active runway. At the same time the ground controller radioed me to 'stop immediately.' human performance considerations: I was fatigued from working long hours for several weeks. Therefore, I was probably not as alert as a I should have been. Since it was close to 1 mi from the ramp to the active runway intersection, it was easy to get distraction. Preventive actions: 1) on long taxi, report to controller when approaching active runway (may be impractical). 2) greater situational awareness on the part of pilot and controller.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AA5 PLT HAD RWY INCURSION AT LWM.
Narrative: TAXIING FROM N RAMP TO S RAMP ALONG TXWY D. TXWY CROSSES ACTIVE RWY 5/23. GND CTL CLRED ME TO TAXI AND HOLD SHORT OF ACTIVE RWY AS AN ACFT WAS TAKING OFF. AS I APCHED HOLD SHORT LINE, I BECAME DISTR BY AN ITEM FALLING OFF THE SEAT NEXT TO ME. AS A RESULT, I INADVERTENTLY TAXIED PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE. AT THAT MOMENT I LOOKED UP AND STOPPED AS THE ACFT WAS TAKING OFF ON THE ACTIVE RWY. AT THE SAME TIME THE GND CTLR RADIOED ME TO 'STOP IMMEDIATELY.' HUMAN PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS: I WAS FATIGUED FROM WORKING LONG HRS FOR SEVERAL WKS. THEREFORE, I WAS PROBABLY NOT AS ALERT AS A I SHOULD HAVE BEEN. SINCE IT WAS CLOSE TO 1 MI FROM THE RAMP TO THE ACTIVE RWY INTXN, IT WAS EASY TO GET DISTR. PREVENTIVE ACTIONS: 1) ON LONG TAXI, RPT TO CTLR WHEN APCHING ACTIVE RWY (MAY BE IMPRACTICAL). 2) GREATER SITUATIONAL AWARENESS ON THE PART OF PLT AND CTLR.
