Narrative:
Shortly after takeoff we had the tail compartment light come on. Ran through our procedures and checklists, briefed flight attendants and passenger. Light did not go out until short final for runway 17R when we returned to dfw. Out to off was 10 mins. No APU, 100 degrees, and was told they would hook up external air. They did and then maintenance took it off the aircraft while they worked on the problem. They eventually did the right thing and let them off when maintenance decided to take the aircraft OTS.
