Narrative:

I was told to taxi to runway 24 via taxiway a. I pulled out of parking, misread taxi sign and headed a short distance to the right. I thought taxiway a crossed the closed runway. After taxi onto closed runway, I was told I was wrong to turn around, which I did. My problem is there were no other planes on taxiway or runway. It seems to me, being I was only 200 ft from tower, they could have told me long before touching runway. This could have prevented the whole thing.
