Narrative:
Upon landing on runway 27 at stewart international airport at newburgh, ny, at XA30 local time, and exiting the runway at taxiway A3, I was issued taxi instructions to 'remain on tower frequency, taxi east on parallel taxiway to parking area.' at the time, ATIS information was in effect stating both runways 27 and 34 were active. Prior to crossing intersection runway 34, I called the tower twice. On the second attempt, the tower replied and I inquired about the exact location of the parking area. Prior to crossing the physical runway, I had slowed to check possible traffic on runway 34. At that time the tower curtly replied I should ask before crossing a runway, and to do a 180 degree turn, make left at taxiway C, proceed south on taxiway C to FBO. The aim states, 'a clearance from ATC to taxi to the ramp auths the aircraft to cross all runways and taxiway intxns.' I believe the controller was at fault and may have caused a possible runway incursion by issuing a 'taxi to parking area' command if he did not want my aircraft to cross runway 34.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF A BEECH A36 TAXIED PAST RWY HOLD SHORT LINE DURING TAXI TO PARKING DUE TO UNFAMILIARITY WITH THE LOCATION OF THE FBO TO WHICH HE WAS GOING TO PARK.
Narrative: UPON LNDG ON RWY 27 AT STEWART INTL ARPT AT NEWBURGH, NY, AT XA30 LCL TIME, AND EXITING THE RWY AT TXWY A3, I WAS ISSUED TAXI INSTRUCTIONS TO 'REMAIN ON TWR FREQ, TAXI E ON PARALLEL TXWY TO PARKING AREA.' AT THE TIME, ATIS INFO WAS IN EFFECT STATING BOTH RWYS 27 AND 34 WERE ACTIVE. PRIOR TO XING INTXN RWY 34, I CALLED THE TWR TWICE. ON THE SECOND ATTEMPT, THE TWR REPLIED AND I INQUIRED ABOUT THE EXACT LOCATION OF THE PARKING AREA. PRIOR TO XING THE PHYSICAL RWY, I HAD SLOWED TO CHK POSSIBLE TFC ON RWY 34. AT THAT TIME THE TWR CURTLY REPLIED I SHOULD ASK BEFORE XING A RWY, AND TO DO A 180 DEG TURN, MAKE L AT TXWY C, PROCEED S ON TXWY C TO FBO. THE AIM STATES, 'A CLRNC FROM ATC TO TAXI TO THE RAMP AUTHS THE ACFT TO CROSS ALL RWYS AND TXWY INTXNS.' I BELIEVE THE CTLR WAS AT FAULT AND MAY HAVE CAUSED A POSSIBLE RWY INCURSION BY ISSUING A 'TAXI TO PARKING AREA' COMMAND IF HE DID NOT WANT MY ACFT TO CROSS RWY 34.
