Narrative:

Sep/xa/00 meigs field in chicago held an event, and as in past yrs asked if we could provide any aircraft for their static display. I was asked by the owner of a 1937 fairchild if I would fly the plane to meigs for the day. We were held, circling out over the lake for nearly 1 hour waiting for our turn to get into meigs. First over montrose harbor, then directly east of the field and again southeast of the field. On landing, I had rolled out and slowed to about 10 mph. I started the turnoff onto the taxiway a bit early and corrected with a touch of right rudder. For reasons unknown, perhaps a spot of oil on the runway, probably an errant gust of wind, the plane swung right and in spite of full left rudder and full left brake, continued to turn to the right. When I felt the wing start to lift, I knew a ground loop was inevitable and elected to just ride it around. I ended up exactly where I started doing no damage to persons or property and continued to turn off on the taxiway and taxi to the display area. The tower, however, got a bit excited, probably due to the pressure the controller was under handling that much mixed traffic and requested that I call him and explain.

Title: THE PLT OF A 1937 FAIRCHILD EXPERIENCES A GND LOOP DURING AN ANTICIPATED RWY EXITING AT CGX, IL.

Narrative: SEP/XA/00 MEIGS FIELD IN CHICAGO HELD AN EVENT, AND AS IN PAST YRS ASKED IF WE COULD PROVIDE ANY ACFT FOR THEIR STATIC DISPLAY. I WAS ASKED BY THE OWNER OF A 1937 FAIRCHILD IF I WOULD FLY THE PLANE TO MEIGS FOR THE DAY. WE WERE HELD, CIRCLING OUT OVER THE LAKE FOR NEARLY 1 HR WAITING FOR OUR TURN TO GET INTO MEIGS. FIRST OVER MONTROSE HARBOR, THEN DIRECTLY E OF THE FIELD AND AGAIN SE OF THE FIELD. ON LNDG, I HAD ROLLED OUT AND SLOWED TO ABOUT 10 MPH. I STARTED THE TURNOFF ONTO THE TXWY A BIT EARLY AND CORRECTED WITH A TOUCH OF R RUDDER. FOR REASONS UNKNOWN, PERHAPS A SPOT OF OIL ON THE RWY, PROBABLY AN ERRANT GUST OF WIND, THE PLANE SWUNG R AND IN SPITE OF FULL L RUDDER AND FULL L BRAKE, CONTINUED TO TURN TO THE R. WHEN I FELT THE WING START TO LIFT, I KNEW A GND LOOP WAS INEVITABLE AND ELECTED TO JUST RIDE IT AROUND. I ENDED UP EXACTLY WHERE I STARTED DOING NO DAMAGE TO PERSONS OR PROPERTY AND CONTINUED TO TURN OFF ON THE TXWY AND TAXI TO THE DISPLAY AREA. THE TWR, HOWEVER, GOT A BIT EXCITED, PROBABLY DUE TO THE PRESSURE THE CTLR WAS UNDER HANDLING THAT MUCH MIXED TFC AND REQUESTED THAT I CALL HIM AND EXPLAIN.
