Narrative:
Cleared to cross hnk at FL280. Set FL280 on flight control unit and confirmed entry on flight control unit and primary flight display. First officer did likewise per SOP's. Entered restr in multi-function control and display unit and selected 'managed speed.' shortly before hnk, noticed that the restr had dropped from multi-function control and display unit and we would not make restr. Increased rate of descent and informed ATC 'out of FL290.' ATC informed us of traffic and then asked us what level we were at. The flight control unit displayed FL270 and aircraft had leveled off at FL270. ATC said 'stay at FL270' and that there was no conflict. Complacency over the aircraft 'magic' led me to reduce my scan and accept that the aircraft would perform as expected. I did not recall if the clearance was FL280 or FL270 and thus did not notice the discrepancy. I was doing some routine paperwork and did not hand over positive control to my first officer.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN A319N FLC OVERSHOOTS THEIR ASSIGNED ALT AFTER FAILING TO MAKE AN ALT XING RESTR OVER HNK, NY.
Narrative: CLRED TO CROSS HNK AT FL280. SET FL280 ON FLT CTL UNIT AND CONFIRMED ENTRY ON FLT CTL UNIT AND PRIMARY FLT DISPLAY. FO DID LIKEWISE PER SOP'S. ENTERED RESTR IN MULTI-FUNCTION CTL AND DISPLAY UNIT AND SELECTED 'MANAGED SPD.' SHORTLY BEFORE HNK, NOTICED THAT THE RESTR HAD DROPPED FROM MULTI-FUNCTION CTL AND DISPLAY UNIT AND WE WOULD NOT MAKE RESTR. INCREASED RATE OF DSCNT AND INFORMED ATC 'OUT OF FL290.' ATC INFORMED US OF TFC AND THEN ASKED US WHAT LEVEL WE WERE AT. THE FLT CTL UNIT DISPLAYED FL270 AND ACFT HAD LEVELED OFF AT FL270. ATC SAID 'STAY AT FL270' AND THAT THERE WAS NO CONFLICT. COMPLACENCY OVER THE ACFT 'MAGIC' LED ME TO REDUCE MY SCAN AND ACCEPT THAT THE ACFT WOULD PERFORM AS EXPECTED. I DID NOT RECALL IF THE CLRNC WAS FL280 OR FL270 AND THUS DID NOT NOTICE THE DISCREPANCY. I WAS DOING SOME ROUTINE PAPERWORK AND DID NOT HAND OVER POSITIVE CTL TO MY FO.
