Narrative:
On descent for approach to runway 30L at sjc. Established on the localizer inbound, cleared to cross 17 DME at/above 5000 ft, then cleared visual to runway 30L at sjc. Received TCASII RA through approximately 5600 ft initiated the commanded descent, then visually spotted cessna 172/182 type aircraft 1 O'clock position 1/2 mi or less. Cessna was our altitude and then above us as we continued the RA advised descent. Cessna passed 300-400 ft above our aircraft. Notified approach control of traffic and they responded that they had an intermittent return on an aircraft in that area. The approach and landing continued without further event.
