Narrative:
During cruise flight, FL310, 1 flight attendant brought to cockpit a live 12 gauge shotgun shell a passenger gave to her. Passenger was sitting in row xa and found it on the floor. Flight attendant looked around for more and found none. No passenger claimed the shell. Dispatch was notified and they sent ACARS message back saying slc will be notified and meeting the airplane. Upon arrival in slc no one special met the airplane and they claimed no one notified them at all. Passenger deplaned normally. I was disappointed someone dropped the ball and thought at the very least they would have some security personnel there to hand search everyone deplaning carry-on luggage. The station manager had cabin service give the jet an extra good search as well as my flight engineer and no other live ammunition was found. Return trip to dfw was normal. You would think they would find such items at the security screening check-points but there's no way telling when or where it passed through and at what airport. And it could have been on our jet's floor for days before found.
