Narrative:
During pushback, a high workload environment, received message in mcdu scratch pad 'set offside range/mode.' inadvertently assumed independent operation of FMGC's and departed. After takeoff realized that FMGC #1 was inoperative, so we did not comply with MEL. Two low time pilots contributed to error.
