Narrative:
This happened on gillespie airport, el cajon, ca. I am the mechanic for FBO #1 at el cajon, ca. I was coming back from another FBO #2 after getting parts. I called gillespie tower on my hand-held radio to cross runway 35 from the west to east, which was either alpha 1 or 2. I called 'gillespie tower red truck at FBO #2 would like to go to FBO #1.' the tower came back, 'red truck cross at...' I missed the crossing number. I called the tower, asked where to cross. I heard 'alpha 1' I said roger and crossed the runway. I always look when I cross. I didn't see anything. Later I received a call from the tower asking me if I had crossed the runway at alpha 1, I told them I had. They asked for my license plate number which I gave them. Apparently I crossed the runway without proper clearance. There were either 2 people trying to transmit or my radio cut out. I cross this runway 2 or 3 times a day. Next time I will make sure they are addressing me.
