Narrative:
We relied on the fuel totalizer to tell us we had 2500 pounds of fuel. In actuality we had somewhere around 1200 pounds of fuel. After entering the cruise portion of the flight we noticed that the actual fuel quantity gauges and the fuel totalizer were not agreeing. We then realized that with the fuel we actually had in the tanks (about 500 pounds) that we could not safely make it to dfw. We then chose to divert to fsm in order to take on more fuel. We landed with around 300 pounds. Contributing factors of the mistake were: 1) 2 capts flying together, and 2) reduced rest (exactly 8 hours which equals about 5 1/2 hours sleep).
