Narrative:
ZID cleared us from FL280 to FL310 and then handed us off to ZAU. Shortly after checking in with ZAU, we leveled at FL310. Then shortly after that, ZAU told us to turn 80 degrees right and descend immediately to FL280. We asked the reason for this maneuver and the controller replied, 'I don't know what's going on, but ZID should not have climbed you to FL310.' ZAU later told us that ZID had thought they'd given us FL280 as an altitude, not FL310.
