Narrative:
We were vectored to ILS runway 16R approach. We had localizer intercept and were cleared for the approach. Approximately 4 mi outside the OM we were told to go missed approach (we were at approximately 2800 ft), climb and maintain runway heading and climb to 5000 ft. The aircraft was in the capture mode and we were unable to get it to respond to any commands via the MCP. I disconnected the autoplt and autothrottles and was hand flying the aircraft. We were told to turn right to 190 degrees, and still the aircraft would not allow us to even use the heading bug. My attention as well as the captain's was diverted to solving the lack of automation response and I climbed to approximately 5500 ft. I then descended to 5000 ft. Approach control asked us to confirm leveling at 5000 ft. We recycled the navigation frequency and solved the problem and went around and landed normally.

Title: A B737-700 ON APCH AT 2800 FT IS ADVISED TO 'GO MISSED APCH.' AUTOPLT WAS IN THE CAPTURE MODE AND WOULD NOT RESPOND TO COMMANDS AND IT WAS NECESSARY TO HAND FLY ACFT, BUT OVERSHOT 5000 FT ASSIGNED ALT.
Narrative: WE WERE VECTORED TO ILS RWY 16R APCH. WE HAD LOC INTERCEPT AND WERE CLRED FOR THE APCH. APPROX 4 MI OUTSIDE THE OM WE WERE TOLD TO GO MISSED APCH (WE WERE AT APPROX 2800 FT), CLB AND MAINTAIN RWY HDG AND CLB TO 5000 FT. THE ACFT WAS IN THE CAPTURE MODE AND WE WERE UNABLE TO GET IT TO RESPOND TO ANY COMMANDS VIA THE MCP. I DISCONNECTED THE AUTOPLT AND AUTOTHROTTLES AND WAS HAND FLYING THE ACFT. WE WERE TOLD TO TURN R TO 190 DEGS, AND STILL THE ACFT WOULD NOT ALLOW US TO EVEN USE THE HDG BUG. MY ATTN AS WELL AS THE CAPT'S WAS DIVERTED TO SOLVING THE LACK OF AUTOMATION RESPONSE AND I CLBED TO APPROX 5500 FT. I THEN DSNDED TO 5000 FT. APCH CTL ASKED US TO CONFIRM LEVELING AT 5000 FT. WE RECYCLED THE NAV FREQ AND SOLVED THE PROB AND WENT AROUND AND LANDED NORMALLY.
