Narrative:
Taxiing out on snow covered ramp, there was a gap in blue taxi lights that appeared to be a taxiway due to aircraft tire marks in snow. Taxiway sign D was in vicinity, although in a non standard position. We taxied out uneventfully and I noticed more aircraft tire tracks in another area that might actually have been taxiway D. The lack of standardization in taxiway markings and snow/reduced visibility makes it difficult to be sure you are in the right place. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: flight crew was flying a B757-200. They were taxiing from the terminal with a left turn to go to runway 19R. He does not think taxiway D could be involved. It was most likely taxiway B or taxiway M. The snow cover was obscuring the taxiway completely.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B757-200 CREW HAD TROUBLE SEEING THE TXWY THAT WAS COVERED WITH SNOW AT PAFA, FAIRBANKS, AK.
Narrative: TAXIING OUT ON SNOW COVERED RAMP, THERE WAS A GAP IN BLUE TAXI LIGHTS THAT APPEARED TO BE A TXWY DUE TO ACFT TIRE MARKS IN SNOW. TXWY SIGN D WAS IN VICINITY, ALTHOUGH IN A NON STANDARD POS. WE TAXIED OUT UNEVENTFULLY AND I NOTICED MORE ACFT TIRE TRACKS IN ANOTHER AREA THAT MIGHT ACTUALLY HAVE BEEN TXWY D. THE LACK OF STANDARDIZATION IN TXWY MARKINGS AND SNOW/REDUCED VISIBILITY MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO BE SURE YOU ARE IN THE RIGHT PLACE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: FLC WAS FLYING A B757-200. THEY WERE TAXIING FROM THE TERMINAL WITH A L TURN TO GO TO RWY 19R. HE DOES NOT THINK TXWY D COULD BE INVOLVED. IT WAS MOST LIKELY TXWY B OR TXWY M. THE SNOW COVER WAS OBSCURING THE TXWY COMPLETELY.
