Narrative:
Throughout ground operations, including taxi out and possibly takeoff, captain was using a cell phone in the cockpit. He had a remote microphone and appeared to be giving a running narrative of our progress. It's unknown who he was talking to. But since the captain lives several mi from the airport, I suspect it was someone watching the takeoff. He neither asked the crew nor informed the crew of his intentions before or during the incident.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B747-400 FO RPTS THAT HIS CAPT, WHO LIVES SEVERAL MI FROM THE ARPT, WAS USING A CELL PHONE WITH A REMOTE MIKE TO GIVE A 'RUNNING NARRATIVE OF THE FLT'S PROGRESS' DURING TAXI BEFORE TKOF AT LAX, CA.
Narrative: THROUGHOUT GND OPS, INCLUDING TAXI OUT AND POSSIBLY TKOF, CAPT WAS USING A CELL PHONE IN THE COCKPIT. HE HAD A REMOTE MIKE AND APPEARED TO BE GIVING A RUNNING NARRATIVE OF OUR PROGRESS. IT'S UNKNOWN WHO HE WAS TALKING TO. BUT SINCE THE CAPT LIVES SEVERAL MI FROM THE ARPT, I SUSPECT IT WAS SOMEONE WATCHING THE TKOF. HE NEITHER ASKED THE CREW NOR INFORMED THE CREW OF HIS INTENTIONS BEFORE OR DURING THE INCIDENT.
