Narrative:
Just after liftoff on runway 22R at jfk, flew through birds. One bird was observed passing close aboard on left side of aircraft. Loud 'thud' and airframe vibration felt. Passenger and flight attendant reported long flame from left engine lasting 6-7 seconds. Declared emergency and returned to land on runway 22R at jfk. A smooth minimum descent overweight landing was accomplished on wet runway with strong left to right crosswind. No engine indications changed during incident. Engine operated normally during duration of flight.

Title: A B757 IS MANDATED TO RETURN LAND AFTER INGESTING A BIRD INTO THE L ENG AT 100 FT ON TKOF IN IMC WX CONDITIONS AT JFK, NY.
Narrative: JUST AFTER LIFTOFF ON RWY 22R AT JFK, FLEW THROUGH BIRDS. ONE BIRD WAS OBSERVED PASSING CLOSE ABOARD ON L SIDE OF ACFT. LOUD 'THUD' AND AIRFRAME VIBRATION FELT. PAX AND FLT ATTENDANT RPTED LONG FLAME FROM L ENG LASTING 6-7 SECONDS. DECLARED EMER AND RETURNED TO LAND ON RWY 22R AT JFK. A SMOOTH MINIMUM DSCNT OVERWT LNDG WAS ACCOMPLISHED ON WET RWY WITH STRONG L TO R XWIND. NO ENG INDICATIONS CHANGED DURING INCIDENT. ENG OPERATED NORMALLY DURING DURATION OF FLT.
