Narrative:
Leaving the ramp at ewr, we were given taxi clearance to 'runway 22R at taxiway west (intersection takeoff) via taxiway B, hold short taxiway V.' WX was marginal 1/4 - 1/2 mi in fog. I had turned down my cockpit lighting to better see the taxiway (ewr had no centerline taxi lights). As we taxied out, I spotted taxiway B on my chart and saw what appeared to be taxiway V near the departure end of runway 22R. This made sense. We began our before takeoff checks and once on taxiway B I diverted my attention inside to perform the checks. Suddenly, ground controller called us and asked if we had misunderstood our clearance. We stopped the airplane and were both perplexed until we took a closer look at the plate. Taxiway V was actually located near taxiway a and taxiway B and was one of the first we crossed out of our ramp.

Title: B727 FREIGHTER CREW MISREAD CHART AND TAXIED PAST THEIR HOLD SHORT POINT.
Narrative: LEAVING THE RAMP AT EWR, WE WERE GIVEN TAXI CLRNC TO 'RWY 22R AT TXWY W (INTXN TKOF) VIA TXWY B, HOLD SHORT TXWY V.' WX WAS MARGINAL 1/4 - 1/2 MI IN FOG. I HAD TURNED DOWN MY COCKPIT LIGHTING TO BETTER SEE THE TXWY (EWR HAD NO CTRLINE TAXI LIGHTS). AS WE TAXIED OUT, I SPOTTED TXWY B ON MY CHART AND SAW WHAT APPEARED TO BE TXWY V NEAR THE DEP END OF RWY 22R. THIS MADE SENSE. WE BEGAN OUR BEFORE TKOF CHKS AND ONCE ON TXWY B I DIVERTED MY ATTN INSIDE TO PERFORM THE CHKS. SUDDENLY, GND CTLR CALLED US AND ASKED IF WE HAD MISUNDERSTOOD OUR CLRNC. WE STOPPED THE AIRPLANE AND WERE BOTH PERPLEXED UNTIL WE TOOK A CLOSER LOOK AT THE PLATE. TXWY V WAS ACTUALLY LOCATED NEAR TXWY A AND TXWY B AND WAS ONE OF THE FIRST WE CROSSED OUT OF OUR RAMP.
