Narrative:

After departure, we were cleared to 9000 ft and 250 KTS. Later, we were cleared to 15000 ft. During climb, I accelerated to 300 KTS. Socal (frequency 125.2) asked if we were restr, to which I replied no. I realized later that we were restr, but I understood the speed restr to mean accelerate to 250 KTS because of other departing aircraft. I did not understand it was a do not exceed 250 KTS, when my first officer said was the clearance. When we were cleared above 10000 ft, a restr was not reissued, which I understand was not necessary. I called socal in rno. The supervisor said there was no conflict and said I should expect that restr leaving lax.

Title: MD80 PIC MISUNDERSTAND DEP SPD RESTR AND ACCELERATE FROM THE ASSIGNED SPD OF 250 KTS TO 300 KTS.

Narrative: AFTER DEP, WE WERE CLRED TO 9000 FT AND 250 KTS. LATER, WE WERE CLRED TO 15000 FT. DURING CLB, I ACCELERATED TO 300 KTS. SOCAL (FREQ 125.2) ASKED IF WE WERE RESTR, TO WHICH I REPLIED NO. I REALIZED LATER THAT WE WERE RESTR, BUT I UNDERSTOOD THE SPD RESTR TO MEAN ACCELERATE TO 250 KTS BECAUSE OF OTHER DEPARTING ACFT. I DID NOT UNDERSTAND IT WAS A DO NOT EXCEED 250 KTS, WHEN MY FO SAID WAS THE CLRNC. WHEN WE WERE CLRED ABOVE 10000 FT, A RESTR WAS NOT REISSUED, WHICH I UNDERSTAND WAS NOT NECESSARY. I CALLED SOCAL IN RNO. THE SUPVR SAID THERE WAS NO CONFLICT AND SAID I SHOULD EXPECT THAT RESTR LEAVING LAX.
