Narrative:
We were departing maiquetia, venezuela (svmi) on the 1 mares 8/9 SID and it says to climb to 4000 ft. We did. After traffic crossed at 5000 ft, ATC said to climb and maintain FL350. We did. After looking closer at the SID, there is an arrow pointing to mares intersection with a note saying 'continue climb according to ATC instructions.' I think this may imply that even though ATC told us to climb to FL350 we should have stayed at 4000 ft until mares intersection. ATC didn't complain and I don't believe there was a traffic conflict but it was a little confusing. Their phraseology down there tends to be a little different than ours adding to the confusion. The next time we go down there we will ask them to clarify what they want us to do.
