Narrative:

Flying east towards eic, was asked by center if we could make FL370 by 25 DME west of eic. We were still around FL280 and replied negative. The controller then gave us a southerly heading and told us to stop our climb at FL330. He then switched us to another controller on frequency 132.27. We were then told to climb to FL370 and go direct to hrv. A min or so later, climbing through FL360, without warning, we were instructed to immediately turn left 90 degrees and descend to FL330. We switched off the autoplt and complied as quickly and smoothly as possible. In the meantime, we got a TA on the TCASII 700 ft above us. The controller then told us 'thanks for the help' and we continued on our way. We were not sure what was not communicated between controllers, but were not given an explanation. No problems occurred in the back of the plane, but definitely got some comments.
