Air Traffic Incident | Operational Deviation |
Narrative:
Flight descended below assigned altitude of FL330. When questioned, pilot stated he was cleared to FL310 (not my airspace). Quickly instructed aircraft to climb to FL330 and coordinated with sector below me. Sector below asked me to issue FL290. I issued FL290 and handed aircraft off. This was either a missed readback on my behalf or pilot deviation. I did not report the incident. It is also possible (as much as I hate to admit) that I could have issued FL310 and typed FL330 into data block. I'm certified at both sectors, so it is possible that the altitudes could have been mixed up by me. The sector boundaries are the same. The high is FL240-FL310 and super high, where I was, at FL330-FL999.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ZID CTLR QUESTIONS HIS ALT ASSIGNMENT TO AN ENRTE DC9 AS HE OBSERVES ACFT DSND INTO ANOTHER CTLR'S AIRSPACE.
Narrative: FLT DSNDED BELOW ASSIGNED ALT OF FL330. WHEN QUESTIONED, PLT STATED HE WAS CLRED TO FL310 (NOT MY AIRSPACE). QUICKLY INSTRUCTED ACFT TO CLB TO FL330 AND COORDINATED WITH SECTOR BELOW ME. SECTOR BELOW ASKED ME TO ISSUE FL290. I ISSUED FL290 AND HANDED ACFT OFF. THIS WAS EITHER A MISSED READBACK ON MY BEHALF OR PLTDEV. I DID NOT RPT THE INCIDENT. IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE (AS MUCH AS I HATE TO ADMIT) THAT I COULD HAVE ISSUED FL310 AND TYPED FL330 INTO DATA BLOCK. I'M CERTIFIED AT BOTH SECTORS, SO IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE ALTS COULD HAVE BEEN MIXED UP BY ME. THE SECTOR BOUNDARIES ARE THE SAME. THE HIGH IS FL240-FL310 AND SUPER HIGH, WHERE I WAS, AT FL330-FL999.
