Narrative:
Requested hold as published for bjc ILS while self training on ILS visually. ATC approved. While outbound approximately 2.3 NM from alike FAF and in a standard rate turn back to the 110 degree radial, ATC reported an aircraft on my left. I looked left and saw no aircraft. At approximately 30 degrees to the right of my nose, a landing light appeared. I had reported my altitude at 7250 ft MSL. I heard the controller tell the husky 'maintain 7000 ft.' the husky was 25-50 ft above and +/-300 ft horizontal from me on the right. Discovered visually. 45-50 degrees left diving turn to avoid. Established a 350 degree heading. Climbed to 7200 ft. Called ATC and advised maneuvering. Re-requested ILS vectors bjc ILS. Not sure husky pilot ever saw me. Controller had us on close vertical spacing. Possible husky had incorrect altitude setting or poor transponder or not paying attention to altitude. Better timing and separation by controller. Look outside of aircraft #2 to avoid similar situation.

Title: C172 TAKES EVASIVE ACTION FROM A HUSKY WHILE BOTH ACFT ARE UNDER D01 CTL AS THE C172 IS CONDUCTING A VFR PRACTICE APCH TO BJC ARPT.
Narrative: REQUESTED HOLD AS PUBLISHED FOR BJC ILS WHILE SELF TRAINING ON ILS VISUALLY. ATC APPROVED. WHILE OUTBOUND APPROX 2.3 NM FROM ALIKE FAF AND IN A STANDARD RATE TURN BACK TO THE 110 DEG RADIAL, ATC RPTED AN ACFT ON MY L. I LOOKED L AND SAW NO ACFT. AT APPROX 30 DEGS TO THE R OF MY NOSE, A LNDG LIGHT APPEARED. I HAD RPTED MY ALT AT 7250 FT MSL. I HEARD THE CTLR TELL THE HUSKY 'MAINTAIN 7000 FT.' THE HUSKY WAS 25-50 FT ABOVE AND +/-300 FT HORIZ FROM ME ON THE R. DISCOVERED VISUALLY. 45-50 DEGS L DIVING TURN TO AVOID. ESTABLISHED A 350 DEG HDG. CLBED TO 7200 FT. CALLED ATC AND ADVISED MANEUVERING. RE-REQUESTED ILS VECTORS BJC ILS. NOT SURE HUSKY PLT EVER SAW ME. CTLR HAD US ON CLOSE VERT SPACING. POSSIBLE HUSKY HAD INCORRECT ALT SETTING OR POOR XPONDER OR NOT PAYING ATTN TO ALT. BETTER TIMING AND SEPARATION BY CTLR. LOOK OUTSIDE OF ACFT #2 TO AVOID SIMILAR SIT.
