Narrative:
Our flight departed stl for rsw. After leveling off at FL290 on a heading for seminole (szw), we requested FL330 if the rides were good. Controller for ZME said the rides were ok at FL330 and gave us a choice of going to nashville or meridian. Thinking this was a turn for the climb, we asked for the most direct route. We were given a clearance 'direct to meridian and climb FL330' which we read back. At about FL296, memphis questioned our altitude and said we were not cleared to FL330 and wanted us to be level at FL290 in less than 1 min, which we did. After we leveled off at FL290, we asked for a heading for meridian, since we were out of range of the VOR. Different controller on the same frequency said we showed direct to seminole. We explained the clearance we were given and what had happened, and controller said that clearance was for a company flight behind us 'no harm, no foul.' we do not recall another company flight on that frequency, nor did another flight crew notice a discrepancy in flight numbers or clearance.

Title: MD80 CREW ASK AND INTERP INFO RECEIVED FROM ZME AS 'TURN AND CLB.' ZME ADVISED THAT CLRNC WAS FOR ANOTHER COMPANY ACFT.
Narrative: OUR FLT DEPARTED STL FOR RSW. AFTER LEVELING OFF AT FL290 ON A HDG FOR SEMINOLE (SZW), WE REQUESTED FL330 IF THE RIDES WERE GOOD. CTLR FOR ZME SAID THE RIDES WERE OK AT FL330 AND GAVE US A CHOICE OF GOING TO NASHVILLE OR MERIDIAN. THINKING THIS WAS A TURN FOR THE CLB, WE ASKED FOR THE MOST DIRECT RTE. WE WERE GIVEN A CLRNC 'DIRECT TO MERIDIAN AND CLB FL330' WHICH WE READ BACK. AT ABOUT FL296, MEMPHIS QUESTIONED OUR ALT AND SAID WE WERE NOT CLRED TO FL330 AND WANTED US TO BE LEVEL AT FL290 IN LESS THAN 1 MIN, WHICH WE DID. AFTER WE LEVELED OFF AT FL290, WE ASKED FOR A HDG FOR MERIDIAN, SINCE WE WERE OUT OF RANGE OF THE VOR. DIFFERENT CTLR ON THE SAME FREQ SAID WE SHOWED DIRECT TO SEMINOLE. WE EXPLAINED THE CLRNC WE WERE GIVEN AND WHAT HAD HAPPENED, AND CTLR SAID THAT CLRNC WAS FOR A COMPANY FLT BEHIND US 'NO HARM, NO FOUL.' WE DO NOT RECALL ANOTHER COMPANY FLT ON THAT FREQ, NOR DID ANOTHER FLC NOTICE A DISCREPANCY IN FLT NUMBERS OR CLRNC.
