Narrative:

Altitude deviation. At FL320, center asked us to confirm our altitude as we were climbing to our assigned FL330. We said out of FL320 for FL330. He told us we were assigned FL310. We said we were assigned and read back that we were assigned FL330. We then descended to FL310. We were then given a vector for traffic and nothing more was said. Supplemental information from acn 504220: we were filed for FL310, but cleared up to FL330. Climbing through FL320, we were asked if we were level at FL310. We responded that we were cleared up to FL330. We were instructed to descend to FL310 and to turn left 10-20 degrees. We complied with no further action on our or ATC's part.
