Narrative:
VFR 17500 ft with advisory. Advised ZLA I could not maintain VFR and would have to climb or descend for oncoming clouds. ZLA advised ok to 17900 ft. This appeared to work for a while then center advised mode C was FL181 and I would have to descend or change to IFR flight plan. My altimeter was reading FL180. I believe that when I was manipulating the GPS I strayed up 100-200 ft. This is easily done at 500+ KTS TAS. I immediately descended to less than 17900 ft and proceeded to el centro naval facility without incident. There was no other comment from center regarding the incursion. No immediate safety problem presented. I should have descended to 15500 ft giving myself a larger margin for maintaining a VFR altitude.

Narrative: VFR 17500 FT WITH ADVISORY. ADVISED ZLA I COULD NOT MAINTAIN VFR AND WOULD HAVE TO CLB OR DSND FOR ONCOMING CLOUDS. ZLA ADVISED OK TO 17900 FT. THIS APPEARED TO WORK FOR A WHILE THEN CTR ADVISED MODE C WAS FL181 AND I WOULD HAVE TO DSND OR CHANGE TO IFR FLT PLAN. MY ALTIMETER WAS READING FL180. I BELIEVE THAT WHEN I WAS MANIPULATING THE GPS I STRAYED UP 100-200 FT. THIS IS EASILY DONE AT 500+ KTS TAS. I IMMEDIATELY DSNDED TO LESS THAN 17900 FT AND PROCEEDED TO EL CENTRO NAVAL FACILITY WITHOUT INCIDENT. THERE WAS NO OTHER COMMENT FROM CTR REGARDING THE INCURSION. NO IMMEDIATE SAFETY PROB PRESENTED. I SHOULD HAVE DSNDED TO 15500 FT GIVING MYSELF A LARGER MARGIN FOR MAINTAINING A VFR ALT.
