Narrative:

We asked for lower because we were very high for runway 25L, ATC cleared us to 8000 ft slow to 210 KTS. We hit approach mode instead of localizer on MCP. I asked for gear down final descent checklist in an effort to slow the aircraft. First officer was completing the checklist. When I descended through 8000 ft, he alerted me 8000 ft, 8000 ft. I looked up and saw 7700. By the time we retracted the speed brakes and had more than idle power, we descended to 7500 ft. ATC issued an immediate climb and started vectoring us back to runway 1R.
