Primary Problem | Flight Crew Human Performance |
Air Traffic Incident | Pilot Deviation |
Narrative:
On takeoff aircraft was advised to maintain runway heading. At 400 ft AGL aircraft turned on course. Tower controller did not correct. Aircraft advised by tower to contact departure. Departure cleared aircraft on course immediately on contact. No other traffic was present in the area. Departure advised several mins later that tower had advised runway heading on departure. No correction or deviations were required by our aircraft and no other aircraft were present. This is an airport that this crew frequently operates out of with tower and approach control closed. A normal clearance out of the airport in that environment would be cleared on course. Crews need to be vigilant at airports that they operate out of that have ATC on a part-time condition. Always confirm departure instructions as well as the first fix in the routing and altitude. PF and PNF did not confirm departure instructions and PNF did not correct PF. Tower controller did not correct aircraft when deviation occurred.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NOT MUCH CONCERN IS EXPRESSED UNTIL SEVERAL MINS AFTER A WRONG HEADING IS TAKEN AFTER DEP FROM AN ARPT WITH A PART TIME TWR.
Narrative: ON TKOF ACFT WAS ADVISED TO MAINTAIN RWY HEADING. AT 400 FT AGL ACFT TURNED ON COURSE. TWR CTLR DID NOT CORRECT. ACFT ADVISED BY TWR TO CONTACT DEP. DEP CLRED ACFT ON COURSE IMMEDIATELY ON CONTACT. NO OTHER TFC WAS PRESENT IN THE AREA. DEP ADVISED SEVERAL MINS LATER THAT TWR HAD ADVISED RWY HEADING ON DEP. NO CORRECTION OR DEVS WERE REQUIRED BY OUR ACFT AND NO OTHER ACFT WERE PRESENT. THIS IS AN ARPT THAT THIS CREW FREQUENTLY OPERATES OUT OF WITH TWR AND APCH CTL CLOSED. A NORMAL CLRNC OUT OF THE ARPT IN THAT ENVIRONMENT WOULD BE CLRED ON COURSE. CREWS NEED TO BE VIGILANT AT ARPTS THAT THEY OPERATE OUT OF THAT HAVE ATC ON A PART-TIME CONDITION. ALWAYS CONFIRM DEP INSTRUCTIONS AS WELL AS THE FIRST FIX IN THE ROUTING AND ALT. PF AND PNF DID NOT CONFIRM DEP INSTRUCTIONS AND PNF DID NOT CORRECT PF. TWR CTLR DID NOT CORRECT ACFT WHEN DEV OCCURRED.
