Narrative:
Departing ewr vicinity of elliot intersection cleared to FL170 we were given frequency change and after checking on we were cleared direct dimmo intersection and climb to FL280. I entered direct dimmo in FMC which may have taken longer than normal due to unfamiliarity of system and need to insure change was correct. Meanwhile aircraft had entered altitude capture for 17000 ft. Upon noticing leveloff at 17000 ft VNAV was reselected and climb started to FL280. Shortly thereafter ATC asked what altitude was and gave us a heading and speed reduction due to traffic. We advised that we were out 17800 ft climbing at 3000 FPM. He then told us that he gave us altitude when we first checked on and indicated that we did not start fast enough. There was a short delay before reestablishing climb, however, delay seemed reasonable to us. I then asked controller if we had a problem and he indicated that there was none.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A MOMENTARY DELAY IN EXECUTING A CLRNC BY AN ACR CREW THAT WAS WORKING WITH A NEW ACFT NAV SYS LEADS TO A DEVELOPING TFC CONFLICT THAT IS RESOLVED BY THE CTLR WITH A HEADING CHANGE.
Narrative: DEPARTING EWR VICINITY OF ELLIOT INTXN CLRED TO FL170 WE WERE GIVEN FREQ CHANGE AND AFTER CHKING ON WE WERE CLRED DIRECT DIMMO INTXN AND CLB TO FL280. I ENTERED DIRECT DIMMO IN FMC WHICH MAY HAVE TAKEN LONGER THAN NORMAL DUE TO UNFAMILIARITY OF SYS AND NEED TO INSURE CHANGE WAS CORRECT. MEANWHILE ACFT HAD ENTERED ALT CAPTURE FOR 17000 FT. UPON NOTICING LEVELOFF AT 17000 FT VNAV WAS RESELECTED AND CLB STARTED TO FL280. SHORTLY THEREAFTER ATC ASKED WHAT ALT WAS AND GAVE US A HEADING AND SPD REDUCTION DUE TO TFC. WE ADVISED THAT WE WERE OUT 17800 FT CLBING AT 3000 FPM. HE THEN TOLD US THAT HE GAVE US ALT WHEN WE FIRST CHKED ON AND INDICATED THAT WE DID NOT START FAST ENOUGH. THERE WAS A SHORT DELAY BEFORE REESTABLISHING CLB, HOWEVER, DELAY SEEMED REASONABLE TO US. I THEN ASKED CTLR IF WE HAD A PROB AND HE INDICATED THAT THERE WAS NONE.
