Narrative:

We originated aircraft in msy on mar/thu. The FMC navigation database was out of date. I called dispatch, conferred with duty control, and deferred the navigation database, MEL 34-36. We flew 1 leg to hou where the navigation database was updated and the MEL item cleared. Later I heard that many aircraft had out-of-date navigation data. Normally the new navigation data is loaded in the standby position and only has to be selected by the crew on the change date. I don't know where the ball was dropped, but perhaps the problem could have been headed off if the flight crews would advise maintenance of aircraft that have navigation data that is about to expire a few days ahead of the expiration date.
