Narrative:

On approach to runway 26R at atl, we were on a heading to intercept the localizer at 210 KTS. Simultaneous approachs to runway 27L were commencing. With the autoplt set to capture the localizer, we noticed it was going to bank to the localizer but couldn't capture it using autoplt banking. The first officer disconnected the autoplt and we used maximum banking to remain close to the localizer. We approached from the north and deviated south. Meanwhile, the MD88 approached its localizer from the south and also deviated or overshot the approach. We were both correcting in broken clouds visually and we got the RA at that time. We should have hand flown the approach and asked to slow down close to the localizer course. 2 aircraft making the same mistake could have been an near midair collision. Staggered approachs should have been implemented in broken cloud IMC approachs.

Title: FO OF A B727 OVERSHOT AN INTERMEDIATE ALT DURING DSCNT AND OVERSHOT FINAL WHEN INTERCEPTING THE LOC CAUSING CONFLICTION WITH ANOTHER ACFT TURNING ON FINAL FOR THE PARALLEL RWY WHICH HAD ALSO OVERSHOT THE FINAL TURN.

Narrative: ON APCH TO RWY 26R AT ATL, WE WERE ON A HDG TO INTERCEPT THE LOC AT 210 KTS. SIMULTANEOUS APCHS TO RWY 27L WERE COMMENCING. WITH THE AUTOPLT SET TO CAPTURE THE LOC, WE NOTICED IT WAS GOING TO BANK TO THE LOC BUT COULDN'T CAPTURE IT USING AUTOPLT BANKING. THE FO DISCONNECTED THE AUTOPLT AND WE USED MAX BANKING TO REMAIN CLOSE TO THE LOC. WE APCHED FROM THE N AND DEVIATED S. MEANWHILE, THE MD88 APCHED ITS LOC FROM THE S AND ALSO DEVIATED OR OVERSHOT THE APCH. WE WERE BOTH CORRECTING IN BROKEN CLOUDS VISUALLY AND WE GOT THE RA AT THAT TIME. WE SHOULD HAVE HAND FLOWN THE APCH AND ASKED TO SLOW DOWN CLOSE TO THE LOC COURSE. 2 ACFT MAKING THE SAME MISTAKE COULD HAVE BEEN AN NMAC. STAGGERED APCHS SHOULD HAVE BEEN IMPLEMENTED IN BROKEN CLOUD IMC APCHS.
