Narrative:
It was my leg. The first officer correctly loaded the FMS for the leg. During cruise, I was inputting data on the jannesville 4 arrival into ord, and incorrectly input a portion of the STAR that we were not cleared to fly. Our clearance was: dbq jvl JVL4 ord, but I input dbq as a transition point to the STAR. (Dbq radial was shown on STAR as intersection indent.) ZAU queried us on our heading, due to the fact we were not proceeding direct to jvl. We then noted my mistake on data input and misinterp of the clearance, and turned direct to jvl. Center said that the mistake created no problem/conflict. The mistake was caused by my incorrectly reading the STAR and looking at the identify radial as a transition.

Title: B757 FLT CREW SELECTS THE INCORRECT FIX IN THE FMC AND THE ACFT FLIES IN THE WRONG DIRECTION. ARTCC CORRECTS THE FLT CREW.
Narrative: IT WAS MY LEG. THE FO CORRECTLY LOADED THE FMS FOR THE LEG.
