Narrative:
On descent approximately 60-80 NM from msn airport, descending approximately thru 15000 ft to 13000 ft MSL, we encountered a lightning flash/strike. We were northwest of msn, paralleling a broken line of WX approximately 20 mi to our southwest/west. During this time we were encountering light to moderate rain and a brief period of light to moderate turbulence. After inspecting the aircraft, there was damage to a static wire, and a communication antenna. The continuation of the flight to msn was without any deviations and all aircraft system were normal. Since we were avoiding WX from our southwest by approximately 20 mi, the lightning strike was unexpected. Also, another DC9 was approaching msn from the southeast on descent at the same time we were. That aircraft also obtained a lightning strike and was damaged as well.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: 2 ACFT IN THE MADISON, WI, AREA ENCOUNTER TURB AND LIGHTNING STRIKES THAT PRODUCED SOME ACFT DAMAGE.
Narrative: ON DSCNT APPROX 60-80 NM FROM MSN ARPT, DSNDING APPROX THRU 15000 FT TO 13000 FT MSL, WE ENCOUNTERED A LIGHTNING FLASH/STRIKE. WE WERE NW OF MSN, PARALLELING A BROKEN LINE OF WX APPROX 20 MI TO OUR SW/W. DURING THIS TIME WE WERE ENCOUNTERING LIGHT TO MODERATE RAIN AND A BRIEF PERIOD OF LIGHT TO MODERATE TURB. AFTER INSPECTING THE ACFT, THERE WAS DAMAGE TO A STATIC WIRE, AND A COM ANTENNA. THE CONTINUATION OF THE FLT TO MSN WAS WITHOUT ANY DEVS AND ALL ACFT SYS WERE NORMAL. SINCE WE WERE AVOIDING WX FROM OUR SW BY APPROX 20 MI, THE LIGHTNING STRIKE WAS UNEXPECTED. ALSO, ANOTHER DC9 WAS APCHING MSN FROM THE SE ON DSCNT AT THE SAME TIME WE WERE. THAT ACFT ALSO OBTAINED A LIGHTNING STRIKE AND WAS DAMAGED AS WELL.
