Narrative:
Cleared from FL330 to descend/maintain FL180. Programmed autoflt VNAV to descend and armed FL180. Because we were close to destination, we were descending with speed brakes extended at maximum descent rate. As we approached FL180, we noticed that autoplt had disarmed altitude capture. Disconnected autoplt and initiated leveloff, but went several hundred ft below assigned altitude. Contributing factors: late descent clearance, autoplt failure to capture altitude.

Title: A LATE DSCNT CLRNC, A HIGH RATE OF DSCNT, AN AUTOPLT DISCONNECT FOLLOWED BY A TOO LATE RECOVERY ATTEMPT, END IN AN ALT OVERSHOOT.
