Narrative:
We were terminating flight at alb. We were doing a single engine turn to drop off our passenger and then quickly taxi to an FBO ramp on the airport to close out the aircraft for the night. We had the #2 engine running. For some reason unknown to me, I (the captain) had the parking brake off. The marshaller removed our chocks and gave us the 'start #1 engine' symbol. At that point, I brought the #2 engine out of feather to do a xgenerator start. When the #2 engine came out of feather, the aircraft started to roll forward toward the terminal and the marshaller. The foot brakes and pedals went to the floor, because normal brakes are hydraulic pwred from the #1 engine which wasn't started yet. We scrambled in the cockpit to set the emergency parking brake and bring on the standby hydraulic pumps to provide normal brakes. We stopped the aircraft well short of the terminal and restarted our hearts. Cause of near mishap was complacency and failure to check parking brake 'set' according to checklists. This was a real 'eye opener!'

Title: CAPT OF A DHC8 LOST ACFT CTL ON THE RAMP WHEN BRINGING THE #2 PROP OUT OF FEATHER TO START #1 WITHOUT THE PARKING BRAKE SET, ALLOWING THE ACFT TO MOVE TOWARD THE TERMINAL AND MARSHALLER.

CAUSE OF NEAR MISHAP WAS COMPLACENCY AND FAILURE TO CHK PARKING BRAKE 'SET' ACCORDING TO CHKLISTS. THIS WAS A REAL 'EYE OPENER!'
