Narrative:

TCASII event. While climbing to 17000 ft as assigned by ATC, flight received advisory on VFR traffic (a kingair) at our 12 O'clock position converging at 8 mi. The controller then advised us to level off at 16000 ft. The flight was passing through 16100 ft when the amended clearance was issued. Immediately we received a TA on TCASII followed by an RA to descend on this traffic. Flight crew descended, complied and performed an evasive maneuver to miss the VFR traffic. Advised ATC of RA. I, as captain, notified ATC that flight was clear of conflict and was resuming climb to 16000 ft. ATC reclred flight to 17000 ft. Controller advised us that he was 'a little late' in advising us of the VFR traffic. Flight continued to pit with no further problems. We missed VFR aircraft by less than 1 mi and 400 ft. A little close.
