Narrative:
Flight attendant reported smoke and fumes in the aft lavatory/galley area. First officer went back to verify. Returned, we reported to ATC, declared emergency and received vectors to chs, which was nearest airport. During descent, complied with emergency checklist and pom. Flight attendant reported smell subsiding. A normal approach and landing was made under observation of the fire department. Stopped and cleared runway 33. Fire department looked over the outside of the aircraft and cleared us to taxi in. Elected to taxi to gate and deplane normally. Cause found to be malfunctioning aft lavatory water heater. Heater was removed.

Title: B737-200 CREW HAD SMOKE, FUMES RPTED IN THE AFT LAVATORY AREA IN ZJX CLASS A AIRSPACE.
Narrative: FLT ATTENDANT RPTED SMOKE AND FUMES IN THE AFT LAVATORY/GALLEY AREA. FO WENT BACK TO VERIFY. RETURNED, WE RPTED TO ATC, DECLARED EMER AND RECEIVED VECTORS TO CHS, WHICH WAS NEAREST ARPT. DURING DSCNT, COMPLIED WITH EMER CHKLIST AND POM. FLT ATTENDANT RPTED SMELL SUBSIDING. A NORMAL APCH AND LNDG WAS MADE UNDER OBSERVATION OF THE FIRE DEPT. STOPPED AND CLRED RWY 33. FIRE DEPT LOOKED OVER THE OUTSIDE OF THE ACFT AND CLRED US TO TAXI IN. ELECTED TO TAXI TO GATE AND DEPLANE NORMALLY. CAUSE FOUND TO BE MALFUNCTIONING AFT LAVATORY WATER HEATER. HEATER WAS REMOVED.
