Narrative:
Told to take the runway (into position and hold) and after we were on the runway we could not hear tower talk to us. We could hear other aircraft talking to tower but tower sounded broken and unintelligible to us. We saw on the runway asking tower to say again a number of times but could not hear their entire response. We did not hear if we were cleared for takeoff. A plane on final had to go around. We dialed up ground frequency and were directed to taxi down the runway and exit. We tested our radios and after we got off the runway were then able to hear tower fine. We were able to then take the runway and take off without incident. We have no idea why we could not hear tower clearly.
