Narrative:

We were dispatched with autothrottles deferred. There had been some mixed signals prior to takeoff, since the flight plan remarks included a request for 2 practice autolands in order to recertify for CAT III. We checked with maintenance and they confirmed that autothrottles were inoperative and should not be used. We were descending on autoplt at 250 KTS to 10000 ft MSL with autothrottles off, throttles idle, deviating to avoid WX cells between us and jax. Approach advised us to slow at 10000 ft to be ready for further descent clear of traffic, and to take up a 160 degree heading clear of the WX. We were running the approach checklist as we approached 10000 ft in the descent. I alerted the flight attendants that we were on 'final approach.' the autoplt captured altitude and leveled off at 10000 ft. I was concentrating on maneuvering the aircraft between 2 cells turning to the 160 degree heading. The first officer was busy communicating with approach control. When the stick shaker activated, I disconnected the autoplt while pushing the throttles up. The first officer extended flaps to 5 degrees and we recovered at 10000 ft without altitude deviation. Aircraft attitude and engine operating parameters remained within limits throughout the recovery. There was no loss of separation with the traffic, no deviation from ATC clearance.

Title: A B767 PIC PERFORMS A STALL RECOVERY AFTER LEVELING OFF AT 10000 FT WITHOUT THE USE OF THE AUTOTHROTTLES DURING A VECTOR AROUND TSTM ACTIVITY 20 MI NW OF JAX, FL.

Narrative: WE WERE DISPATCHED WITH AUTOTHROTTLES DEFERRED. THERE HAD BEEN SOME MIXED SIGNALS PRIOR TO TKOF, SINCE THE FLT PLAN REMARKS INCLUDED A REQUEST FOR 2 PRACTICE AUTOLANDS IN ORDER TO RECERTIFY FOR CAT III. WE CHKED WITH MAINT AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT AUTOTHROTTLES WERE INOP AND SHOULD NOT BE USED. WE WERE DSNDING ON AUTOPLT AT 250 KTS TO 10000 FT MSL WITH AUTOTHROTTLES OFF, THROTTLES IDLE, DEVIATING TO AVOID WX CELLS BTWN US AND JAX. APCH ADVISED US TO SLOW AT 10000 FT TO BE READY FOR FURTHER DSCNT CLR OF TFC, AND TO TAKE UP A 160 DEG HDG CLR OF THE WX. WE WERE RUNNING THE APCH CHKLIST AS WE APCHED 10000 FT IN THE DSCNT. I ALERTED THE FLT ATTENDANTS THAT WE WERE ON 'FINAL APCH.' THE AUTOPLT CAPTURED ALT AND LEVELED OFF AT 10000 FT. I WAS CONCENTRATING ON MANEUVERING THE ACFT BTWN 2 CELLS TURNING TO THE 160 DEG HDG. THE FO WAS BUSY COMMUNICATING WITH APCH CTL. WHEN THE STICK SHAKER ACTIVATED, I DISCONNECTED THE AUTOPLT WHILE PUSHING THE THROTTLES UP. THE FO EXTENDED FLAPS TO 5 DEGS AND WE RECOVERED AT 10000 FT WITHOUT ALTDEV. ACFT ATTITUDE AND ENG OPERATING PARAMETERS REMAINED WITHIN LIMITS THROUGHOUT THE RECOVERY. THERE WAS NO LOSS OF SEPARATION WITH THE TFC, NO DEV FROM ATC CLRNC.
